Hello and welcome to this episode of the podcast, "The Mnemonic Memory", where we add a single mnemonic leaf to our Tree of Knowledge.
I’m Jans, your Mnemonic Man, and today's episode will be on a local girl who became universal, the one and only Kylie Minogue.
Now, for all you Kylie Minogue fans out there, Kylie will actually be headlining the pre-game entertainment for this year’s AFL Grand Final (that’s Aussie Rules), which is why I have released this episode a little earlier, so you have the opportunity to tune in and cheer on our pop princes, and that will be on 26th September.
Kylie Minogue is an Australian singer, songwriter and actress, who has pushed her way to be one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Kylie paved her way through acting on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. Her relationship and subsequent marriage to Scott Robinson on the show, who was played by Jason Donovan, was one of the biggest moments in Australian television.
This helped launch her music career in 1987, which she did with the cover “The Loco-Motion”, which reached number one in several countries. This was closely followed by I Should Be So Lucky, Got To Be Certain, Je ne sais pas pourquoi, and the duet with Jason Donovan, Especially For You.
During the 1990s, Kylie’s image evolved, and she explored many different music styles. Her album Impossible Princes in 1997, she wrote or co-wrote almost every track. But it wasn’t until her 2001 album Fever, which contained the song Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, that reignited her career and gave Kylie her most successful and most iconic track.
Kylie’s career has spanned more than four decades; she has performed for the British Royal Family several times, sold millions of records, been appointed an OBE and an AO, named a Chevalier of the French Order, received numerous awards, and has been made out of wax several times. She is the most successful female Australian artist of all time, and has been included in the 2024 list of the 100 Most Influential People in the world.

Kylie Ann Minogue (/mɪˈnoʊɡ/; born 28 May 1968) is an Australian singer, songwriter, and actress. Frequently referred to as the "Princess of Pop", she has achieved recognition in both the music industry and the fashion world as a major style icon.
Her accolades include two Grammy Awards, four Brit Awards and eighteen ARIA Music Awards. Minogue is the highest-selling Australian-born female artist of all time, with sales surpassing 80 million records worldwide.[2] Minogue received two Guinness World Records.[3][4] In 2024, Time included her in its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Minogue first achieved recognition starring as Charlene Mitchell in the Australian soap opera Neighbours (1986–1988). She began her music career in the late 1980s, releasing four dance-pop[5][6] studio albums under PWL.
By the early 1990s, Minogue had amassed several hit singles in Australia and the UK, including "The Loco-Motion", "I Should Be So Lucky", "Especially for You", "Hand on Your Heart", and "Better the Devil You Know". Taking more creative control over her music, she signed with Deconstruction Records in 1993 and released the albums Kylie Minogue (1994) and Impossible Princess (1997).
By joining Parlophone in 1999, Minogue returned to mainstream dance-oriented music with Light Years (2000), including the number-one hits "Spinning Around" and "On a Night Like This". The follow-up, Fever (2001), was an international breakthrough for Minogue, becoming her best-selling album to date. The lead single, "Can't Get You Out of My Head", was a worldwide chart-topper and became one of the most successful singles of the 2000s, selling over five million units.
In film, Minogue made her debut in The Delinquents (1989), and appeared in Street Fighter (1994), Moulin Rouge! (2001), Holy Motors (2012) and San Andreas (2015). In reality television, she appeared as a judge on The Voice UK and The Voice Australia, both in 2014. Her other ventures include product endorsements, books, perfumes, charitable work and a wine brand.
Minogue's achievements include being an ARIA Hall of Fame inductee, Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), Officer of the Order of the British Empire, Chevalier (knight) of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and an honorary Doctor of Health Science (D.H.Sc.).

1. Kylie Minogue got her start as an actress on the Australian soap opera Neighbours. She played the character Charlene Robinson, who was a tomboyish mechanic. She famously married Scott Robinson in the series, who was played by Jason Donovan, who also ventured into the music industry. Fittingly, they also appeared in the final episode of Neighbours after the show was axed after 37 years on the air.
2. Kylie’s music career went off with a bang when she released her first Australian single, The Loco-Motion. It went to number one and stayed there for a total of seven weeks, and ended up being the biggest-selling single in Australia in the 1980s. While her second single, I Should Be So Lucky, was just that. Stock, Aitken and Waterman actually forgot she was coming and had nothing prepared for her to test out. So, they quickly wrote the song in around 40 minutes, and the rest is history.
3. From conquering the music industry, Kylie has now come full circle, using her acting prowess to appear in many Hollywood movies. Some of these movies include The Delinquents, which was her feature film debut, Street Fighter, alongside Claude Van Damme, Bio-Dome, Moulin Rouge! As the Green Fairy, and in the disaster thriller San Andreas with The Rock. She also appeared in a Doctor Who episode called Voyage Of The Dammed, where she played a waitress on board a space Titanic.
4. Kylie’s most popular song Can’t Get You Out of My Head was a stroke of luck. It was initially rejected by other artists, which included Simon Fuller’s pop group S Club 7, and later by English singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Miles Leonard from A&R found the track, which he liked; Kylie fell in love with it after 20 seconds, and ended up releasing it in 2001, when it topped the charts in over 40 countries and became her signature song.
5. Kylie Minogue has received many accolades. Some of these include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007, the first Australian recording artist to receive this honour, an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2019, an OBE in the UK in 2008, a Guinness World Record for having a number-one album in the UK in five consecutive decades, and has had the privilege of having a butterfly named in her honour. On the darker side of Kylie, many, many years ago she used to be my neighbour, and I would find her constantly staring at me through the bushes. It got so bad that I had to actually report it to the local police, explaining, “I can’t get her out of my hedge!”
