🌳 Ep. 239: Cannes Film Festival – Top 6 Facts Memory Mnemonic
đź‘‹ Intro
Hello and welcome to this episode of the podcast, "The Mnemonic Memory", where we add a single mnemonic leaf to our Tree of Knowledge.
I’m Jans, your Mnemonic Man, and today's episode will be on a festival for films: the Cannes Film Festival.
The Cannes Film Festival is an annual event held on the French Riviera in Cannes, France. It is one of the big 5 film festivals, which include the Venice Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, and of course the Cannes Film Festival itself.
It started as a political protest against fascist interference and propaganda at the Venice Film Festival in the late 1930s. The festival was to begin in 1939; however, it was postponed due to World War II and was officially opened after the war in 1946.
Filmmakers strive to win the competition’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, which is awarded to the best film in the official competition. Other awards include the Grand Prix, Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Short Film.
Not only known for its films, but the Cannes Film Festival is also famous for its red carpet, where celebrities attend premieres wearing the latest designer fashion, which is lapped up by photographers and journalists from all over the world.
Since its inception Cannes has had some of the biggest names on its winners list, some of whom have included Cecil B. DeMille, Orson Welles, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino.
The Cannes Film Festival has gone from strength to strength and remains a major celebration of cinema, particularly its cherished tradition of rewarding virtually every film with a superfluous and tedious (interminable) standing ovation.
Today’s mnemonic will be on the top five facts about the Cannes Film Festival.
So, with that being said, we will begin with a summary from Wikipedia.
đź“– Wikipedia Summary
The Cannes Film Festival[a] is considered the most prestigious film festival in the world.[1] Held in Cannes, France, it previews new films of all genres, including documentaries. Founded in 1946, the invitation-only festival is held annually (usually in May) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès.[2]
The festival was formally accredited by the FIAPF in 1951.[3] Cannes is considered one of the "Big Three" European film festivals, alongside Venice and Berlin, as well as one of the "Big Five" international film festivals, alongside Venice, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance.[4][5][6][7]
The Cannes Film Festival has its origins in 1938 when Jean Zay, the French Minister of National Education, at the suggestion of high-ranking official and historian Philippe Erlanger and film journalist Robert Favre Le Bret, set up an international cinematographic festival.
The Americans and the British supported it. On 31 May 1939, the city of Cannes was selected as the festival's location over Biarritz, and the town hall, along with the French government, signed the International Film Festival's official birth certificate with the name of Le Festival International du Film.[8]

🔎 Five Fun Facts
1. The first Cannes Film Festival was started as a French counter-response to political interference and fascist propaganda at the Venice Film Festival. Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini apparently pressured the jury to give the top prizes to Nazi and Italian fascist propaganda films, which outraged the French. So, they created their own international film festival, which was backed by the French government and based purely on artistic merit.
2. The first Cannes Film Festival was planned for September 1, 1939, but it just so happened that this was the exact day German forces invaded Poland. Just three days after the invasion, France and Britain declared war, and thus the outbreak of World War II, forcing organisers to cancel the event. Only one movie was screened before the cancellation, and that was The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
3. The Palme d’Or, which means “Golden Palm,” is awarded to the best feature film in the official competition. Its name was garnered from the palm trees that are a famous feature of the French Riviera. The trophy received for the award is crafted from 18-carat yellow gold on a single piece of cut crystal, which is currently designed by the Swiss jewellery house Chopard.
4. The famous Cannes red carpet lines the 24 steps walked up by celebrities. This requires 60 metres of carpet, which was changed three times a day for the duration of the film festival. The festival changed this rule in 2021, and now, for environmental and sustainability reasons, it is only replaced once per day, saving approximately 1,400 kilograms of carpet over the event.
5. The Cannes Film Festival enforces a strict dress code for evening gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
For women, the dress code is: Floor-length evening gowns, formal little black dresses, cocktail dresses, dark-coloured pantsuits, or a dressy top with black pants.
For men: Classic tuxedos with bow ties, or formal black/navy-blue suits with a bow tie or dark tie. Formal national dress is also permitted.
What is not allowed is nudity, oversized silhouettes, sneakers, and selfies.
Now, I do have a story from when I recently visited Cannes on holiday. Anyway, I was driving around the main precinct when an older, well-known actor, who appeared to be suffering from dementia, hit my car. Anyway, after a confrontation, the scene became a little hostile, and I had to get him arrested.
Anyway, I felt bad as he was getting arrested, as he was sadly and repeatedly shouting, “Do you know who I am?”
